The Chinese Institute of Engineers (CIE)/USA-DFW Chapter celebrated the CIE/USA Day last Saturday on August 20 during its Annual Convention at The Renaissance Dallas Richardson Hotel.
Seven cities within the DFW area, namely Richardson, Garland, Addison, Frisco, Plano, McKinney and Allen, proclaimed the CIE/USA Day, appreciating the contribution of CIE/USA-DFW to the community. They recognized CIE/USA-DFW continual important role in the economy and society, especially with the growing needs for business savvy skilled workers in the field of engineering and science.
More than 650 attended the convention, including the Mayor of Dallas, Mayor Mike Rawlings, Mayor Pro Tem of Richardson, Ms. Laura Maczka, Mayor Pro Tem of Plano, Mr. Pat Miner, and Mayor Pro Tem of Carrollton, Ms. Lisa Sutter.
The theme of this year’s convention is “Global Transformation – Green Business: Emerging Technologies for the New Decade”. The convention started in the morning with the “Cloud Technology Round Table Discussion”. Two experts from Taiwan, Dr. San-Wei Sun of Chunghwa Telecom and Mr. Patrick Fu of Industrial Technology Research Institute, participated in the constructive discussion with the CIE members.
The convention followed by the “Emerging Technology Symposium” in the afternoon. The symposium attracted more than 250 attendances from the public. CIE was honored to have Mr. Jon Summers, the Senior VP of Cloud Realization of AT&T, to be the keynote speaker of the symposium. Mr. Summers shared the strategies and model that AT&T is actively deploying to turn cloud aspirations into reality in our daily lives.
The symposium followed by two parallel technical sessions focusing on the important topics of green businesses in “Cloud Technology” and “Digital Media”. Seven established professionals from Texas Instruments, Chunghwa Telecom, Industrial Technology Research Institute, Deloitte Consulting, Lyfe Communications, Texas A&M University and Fish & Richardson P.C. shared their recent state-of-the-art technological developments.
During the banquet, CIE was honored to have Dr. Steve Dobbs, Sr. Group President of Fluor, to be the dinner keynote speaker. Dr. Dobbs shared his extensive experiences in the large scale capital development all over the world in the form of photo slideshow. The audiences were fascinated by the extreme nature condition that one has to face in order to tap the precious natural resources to supply the increasing global need.
During the banquet, individuals with significant community contribution were recognized. These individuals included Mr. Sami Kiriaki of Texas Instruments, Mr. Joe Stout of Lockheed Martin and Mr. David Arbuckle of AT&T. The 19 recipients of the prestigious Young Achiever Award (YAA) were also awarded the trophies and scholarships during the banquet. This year’s awardee included Ms. Amy Chyao, who won the top prize in Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with her work NanoExplorer at UT Dallas. Her accomplishment was also recognized by President Obama in the White House earlier this year.
The banquet ended with the 2012 CIE/USA-DFW board and officer election results. The new board members include Mr. Ke Bi, Mr. Mark Carpenter, Mr. Julius Chang, Ms. Meimei DiGennaro, Ms. Melanie Huang, Dr. David Kao, Mr. Yung-Song Kao, Mr. Peter Liu, Mr. Sheker Rao, Mr. Francis Tang, Mr. Sammy Yang, Mr. Jason Yeh, and Mr. Sam Zhu. The new officers include: Mr. Sammy Yang as the president, Dr. Yu Meng as the Executive Vice President, Ms. Jane Liu as the VP of Secretary, Ms. Jiayi Liu as the VP of Young Professionals, Dr. Chinpei Tang as the VP of Youth Programs.
The Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA (CIE/USA) is a non-profit professional organization founded in 1917 with a mission to serve members from all over the United States sharing their experiences and insights in business and technology. The DFW Chapter of CIE’s seven technical service groups have provided four technical symposiums this year, focusing on professional knowledge sharing and career development.
