2012 Community Youth Leadership Camp (CYLC), hosted by Community Youth Leadership Club and co sponsored by CIE/USA-DFW Chapter and OCA-DFW Chapter was held from July 23rd to July 28th at Texas A&M – Commerce, Texas. Three hundred and thirty students, ages from eight to eighteen, as well as more than forty teachers/speakers/volunteers, attended the week-long residential summer camp dedicated to fostering leadership skills in young people.
The theme of CYLC this year is “Honor,” as part of its ongoing mission to provide direction, leadership, and guidance for aspiring American youth. Classes and workshop activities included identifying strengths and overcoming weaknesses, learning to communicate effectively and to negotiate with people. There also were special sessions on Homeland Security for disaster and emergency recovery, public health and homeland security, appreciating parents, recognizing the family value and strength, leadership characters, binding friendship, balancing leadership, team-building, confidence-building, brainstorming, self-identification, and innovation projects. Many collaborative projects along with marketing strategy segments brought out the creativity and innovation in the students. Students were particularly impressed by the activities of the filming class that culminated with a completed film that was screened at the final performance.
The week ended with an exciting closing ceremony with the 10th anniversary that included an outstanding musical that was put together with only four days of preparation. The exuberant and highly coordinated dance routines featured all the teams dressed in creative costumes designed by the teachers and campers. The 1000-member audience was totally delighted and showed its appreciation many times through standing ovation.
