Event Chairs: Dr. Carter Tiernan, Rommel Alonzo, Sean Hsu
The 2013 North Texas High School Level Regional Science Bowl was held on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Nedderman Hall of University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) from 9 am to 2 pm. The overwhelming success of the event was the result of strong support of Prof. Carter Tiernan, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and faculty member of Department of Computer Science at UTA, and the tight cooperation between CIE/USA-DFW, the UTA Chapter of Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and College of Engineering of UTA. A total of 14 high school teams registered for the competition.
The National Science Bowl (NSB) is yearly a nationwide academic competition sponsored by the US Department of Energy that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science. Students are quizzed in a fast paced question-and-answer format similar to Jeopardy. Competing teams from diverse backgrounds were comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who served as an advisor and coach. This was the first time CIE/USA-DFW involved in hosting the regional competition, and the winning team from the regional competition advanced to the national level competition held in Washington DC.
The event started by a briefing of the format and rules of the competition at the auditorium. The teams then participated in 3 group level competitions. Four teams with the highest scores then advanced to the semi-final competitions. After an exciting final competition, Paschal 1st team beat Argyle 1st team by 70 points to 22 points, and became the winner of the regional competition. TAMS 1st team and Harmony 1st team were awarded the honorable mentions.
While waiting for the results, the teams were involved in various interesting engineering games, such as bridge building using toothpicks and candies, newspaper tower building and egg drops.
The competition received help from over 20 volunteers, who enthusiastically assisted in the organization of the event. All the participating organizations are looking forward to the continuous cooperation and organizing the competition again in the upcoming years.
