CIE/USA-DFW Chapter sponsored the CYLC Junior Leadership Seminar, hosted by CYLC (Community Youth Leadership Club). The seminar was held at Alexander Clark Center of University of Texas-Dallas on May 19th, 2013. About fifty 9th to 12th grade students attended the half-day workshop in the afternoon. OCA-DFW Chapter and University of Texas-Dallas were also sponsors of the seminar.
This annual junior leadership seminar was designed for teenage youth, and aimed at helping students to build their leadership and self-confidence in preparation for their coming college life. This year’s program comprised two interactive workshops and a panel discussion. The workshops focused on leadership development to build inter-personal relationship, enhance conflict resolution and sharpen positive mental attitude.
The first workshop included two featured presentations: “Timeless Leadership Principles” by Mr. James Carpenter Chief Information Security Officer at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, and “Conflict Resolution” by Mr. Jeff Nekuza, Jail Health IT manager at Parkland Hospital. In the second workshop, Ms. Suzy Fulton, an experienced general counsel, shared her presentation titled “What is a Leader?”, addressing the nature of leadership and role of a true leader using her broad experience when advising start-ups and early-stage companies in relevant aspects of the law such as intellectual property and due-diligence matters. The last session was a panel discussion in which the panelists provided personal experiences and opinions on the choices of colleges and careers with students.
