The young professional group organized a very successful lunch meeting at UT Dallas on Nov 9, 2013 (Saturday). The goal of the meeting is to share ideas from some of the established professionals to young professionals in terms of career planning and development. This lunch was attended by Dr. Yu Meng and Dr. Tao Wang, and about 15 UT Dallas graduate students of different academic background. This meeting is planned and coordinated by Chi (Elliot) Zhou.

2013 Fall Technical Symposium – Cloud Computing Techs – Call for Participation

CIE and SJTU DFW AA Business Forum “Participating in DFW Startups” – a success!

The Dallas-Fort-Worth Chapter of the Chinese Institute of Engineers (CIE/USA-DFW), in partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University DFW Alumni Association (SJTU DFW AA), has successfully organized the 2013 Business Forum “Participating in DFW Startups” on Saturday, October 26, 2013, at Schimelpfenig Library in Plano between 1 – 5 pm. The purpose of the forum was to provide local Chinese engineers and those who are interested in technologies with an info platform of how to participate in technology startups and how to make time and monetary investment to startups.
The joint effort attracted professionals from one incubator (Tech WildCatters), six startups (HedgeChatter, ATCG Solutions, OoMI, AirOn and etc.) and one international law firm (Locke Lord) and more than 80 people from various fields of engineering industry including telecommunication, semiconductor, airline and IT.
During the event, the incubator representative, Program Director of Tech WildCatters, Stewart Youngblood was first invited to give a presentation about their business. He concisely introduced their support to the startups in respective phases tailored to how to help startups grow. The presentation was then followed by the founder of HedgeChatter, James Ross’s speech about their company business and experience of cooperation with Tech WildCatters. James’s company strives to provide a social network based on the stock market, which could leverage abundant information to offer better real-time financial analytics. The intriguing idea along with James’s humorous presenting fashion heated up the interactions between the speakers and audience. After that, representatives of ATCG Solutions, OoMI, AirON and etc. also respectively introduced the company business models and growing pains and gains. As the last presenter, the lawyer from Locke Lord, Tom Tong briefly introduced the legal fundamentals for starting up and running a company, especially related to transnational terms.
In the end, all the speakers composed a discussion panel answering questions such as how to start up a business, how to find the right partner, what resources can be utilized, how to assess the time and monetary investment to the business, how to calculate the shares of your investment and what legal issues should be considered. Both the attendees and speakers agreed that this business forum offered a good opportunity for each other to communicate and make potential investment, and expressed great eagerness to have this event continued in the upcoming years.
The coordinator of the event was Michael Wang, and more than 20 enthusiastic volunteers supported the event organization. CIE/USA-DFW would like to acknowledge the partnership with SJTU DFW Alumni Association and the sponsorship by Texas Instruments.

2014 North Texas Regional Science Bowl (High School Division) – Now Open for Registration!
The North Texas Regional Science Bowl (High School Division) is now open for registration!
The Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA – Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter (CIE/USA-DFW) and the College of Engineering of UT Arlington are proudly hosting the High School Category of the North Texas Regional Science Bowl in the Nedderman Hall at UT Arlington from 9 am to 2 pm on Saturday, February 15, 2014.
The National Science Bowl (NSB) is an annual nationwide academic competition organized and sponsored by the United States Department of Energy. The main goal is to promote the science awareness related to energy to motivate the youths to tackle the energy issue in the nation at their early age. The students in a team of four (with one alternate) are quizzed in a fast-paced question-and-answer sessions similar to the TV game Jeopardy. A teacher will be assigned to be the coach of the team. The winning team of the North Texas Regional Science Bowl will be representing North Texas to advance to the national level competition in Washington DC from April 24 – 28, 2014. 2013 CIE Business Forum – Startups in DFW
Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA-Dallas Fort-Worth Chapter and Shanghai Jiao Tong University DFW Alumni Association are jointly sponsoring the business forum to connect DFW startups with the engineers community. We hope to introduce some opportunities you can do in your spare time:

2013 DFW Youth English Speech Contest Successfully Held in Plano
The 2013 DFW Youth English Speech Contest was a great success. The contest was held from 8 am to 12 pm on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Collin College Living Legends Conference Center at the Spring Creek Campus. The purpose of the event is to foster self-confidence, promote interest in public speaking, provide an opportunity for youths to enhance their speaking skills by competing, and recognize the best to encourage all.
95 student participants from Grades 1 to 12 competed in the contest. More than 200 parents attended and 60 volunteers supported the event. The contest committee made tremendous effort to ensure that the contest was fun and fair to all contestants. The participants were divided into 11 groups to compete. The contest judges were experienced and trained members from Toastmasters International. During the contest, students showed their talent and creativity through all kinds of topics ranging from summer vacation, travel abroad, success and so on. These well prepared speeches brought waves of laughter and applause in the conference center.
The speech contest is not only a competition but also a great opportunity for the students to learn and improve. They have exceled to a higher level of confidence and the skills that they practiced and learned will be extremely valuable for their future career and life. The contest committee members are so excited to see the quick growth of all the students from last year’s contest.
Mr. David Hill, the Toastmasters International World Championship of Public Speaking Finalist, spoke at the award ceremony and interacted with the participants. The student participants were excited to learn about Mr. Hill’s successful stories of public speaking and actively participated in the question and answer session.
The contest was hosted by the Texas Dragon Toastmasters, and was sponsored by Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA – DFW Chapter, Oncor, Texas Instruments and AT&T. Cindi’s New York Deli and Bakery kindly provided delicate breakfast and snacks for the event. The contest committee felt honored to have the opportunity to contribute to the community through this well planned and organized event and looking forward to the contest again next year.

2013 Career Forum for Asian Students Successfully Held at UT Dallas
The Career Forum for Asian Students was successfully held on September 6, 2013 at University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). The Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA DFW Chapter (CIE-USA/DFW) hosted the event along with the Naveen Jindal School of Management of the University of Texas at Dallas, US-China Chamber of Commerce, and Association of Chinese Professionals.
The four-hour forum was filled with inspiring and educational presentations. It brought together 220 graduate students from business, science and engineering majors. The forum consisted of a general session and three breakout sessions. Dr. Carolyn Reichert, director of the graduate program of finance, opened the event. Three keynote speakers were invited to speak in front of the audience. Mr. Lawrence Allen, former Managing Partner of Heidrick & Struggles Beijing Office presented the market dynamics and demand of global human talents. Dr. Charlie Chen, CEO of DFW Technology, elaborated his visionary “formula” for career success and types of human talents. Ms. Adrianne Court, Chief Human Resources Officer of Transplance, addressed a variety of topics including job hunting, resume building, interview techniques, internship opportunities, and career planning.
The event followed by three breakout sessions, where Mr. Sammy Yang, Chairman of the Board of CIE-DFW, Mr. Michael Weng, CEO of Cetetek Technology, Inc., Mr. Megan Lapham, COO of Healthcare Art Consulting, LLC., and Scott Ewert from Grant Thomton delivered their inspiring presentations to facilitate students in science and engineering, finance and management, respectively. A networking reception with delicious refreshments was provided to the enthusiastic participants after the presentations.
The feedback from the students were very positive. Dr. Frank W. Anderson, Senior Lecturer of Finance responded right after the event that “Already, I am receiving emails from students wanting to know if we can do this every semester.” The event was exemplary collaboration among university and local chambers of Asian professional associations. All organizing parties expressed their willing to advance the collaboration in the next year.

The exciting DFW Youth Speech Contest is organized by Texas Dragon Toastmasters Club. It is sponsored by Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA DFW Chapter and Texas Instruments Chinese Initiative. Last year, more than ninety students from Grades 1 to 12 competed in the event and more than 200 parents attended the event.
DFW Youth Speech Contest committee makes extra effort to ensure that the contest is fun and fair to all contestants. The contest judges are experienced and trained members from Toastmasters International. We have invited Mr. David Hill, Toastmasters International World Championship of Public Speaking Finalist to speak at the award ceremony.
