2012 Community Youth Leadership Camp (CYLC), hosted by Community Youth Leadership Club and co sponsored by CIE/USA-DFW Chapter and OCA-DFW Chapter was held from July 23rd to July 28th at Texas A&M – Commerce, Texas. Three hundred and thirty students, ages from eight to eighteen, as well as more than forty teachers/speakers/volunteers, attended the week-long residential summer camp dedicated to fostering leadership skills in young people.

The theme of CYLC this year is “Honor,” as part of its ongoing mission to provide direction, leadership, and guidance for aspiring American youth. Classes and workshop activities included identifying strengths and overcoming weaknesses, learning to communicate effectively and to negotiate with people. There also were special sessions on Homeland Security for disaster and emergency recovery, public health and homeland security, appreciating parents, recognizing the family value and strength, leadership characters, binding friendship, balancing leadership, team-building, confidence-building, brainstorming, self-identification, and innovation projects. Many collaborative projects along with marketing strategy segments brought out the creativity and innovation in the students. Students were particularly impressed by the activities of the filming class that culminated with a completed film that was screened at the final performance.

The week ended with an exciting closing ceremony with the 10th anniversary that included an outstanding musical that was put together with only four days of preparation. The exuberant and highly coordinated dance routines featured all the teams dressed in creative costumes designed by the teachers and campers.   The 1000-member audience was totally delighted and showed its appreciation many times through standing ovation.

CIE/USA-DFW sponsored another successful youth event, 2012 DFW Chinese Youth Camp (CYC), which was held on July 1st through July 7th. Over one hundred-forty campers from age eight to sixteen participated in the summer camp activities and were supported by twenty-six counselors and assistant counselors with ages from fifteen to eighteen. Three teachers, sent by the Overseas Compatriots Affairs Commission of Taiwan ROC held cultural classes to teach Chinese folk dance, Chinese folk activities and Chinese arts and crafts. The arts and crafts teacher taught them how to tie Chinese knots, use Mien to create figurines and much more.  The folk dances showcased during the ending performance included lions, ribbons, fans, flags, nun chucks and Tai Chi.  A personal favorite among all groups was folk activities because students could practice jump rope, traditional Chinese spinning tops and Chinese Yo-Yo.  In addition, CYC had several local teachers teach classes in Chinese painting, etiquette, street dance, Kung-Fu, Chinese song, ballroom dance, and leadership.

The 2012 DFW CYC ended with a successful gala of performance presented by the students. Parents were highly impressed by the gala performance and with the progress made by their children during the camp week. It was clear that campers enjoyed CYC, looked forward to coming back next year, and joined the CYC family.
